The values are related, but wood does not react instantly whenever room air changes. Thickness, finish, species, air circulation, and exposure duration affect the response. One rainy day is not equivalent to months in a damp room.
USDA tables show equilibrium moisture content at different combinations of temperature and relative humidity. They explain trends but do not diagnose a specific piece remotely.
Why wood changes more across its width
Wood is anisotropic: it behaves differently by direction. Longitudinal change—along the grain—is usually small compared with movement across it. Within the cross section, tangential movement is generally greater than radial movement.
That is why a wide top may change measurably in width while changing very little in length. Ring orientation, board arrangement, sawing pattern, and attachment determine how the movement appears.
Good furniture engineering does not overpower wood; it allows controlled movement. Slotted fasteners, appropriate hardware, floating panels, and tolerances are common strategies. Rigidly fixing a wide top at multiple points can restrain movement and concentrate stress.

The practical priorities are to avoid:
- abrupt transfers between very dry and very humid conditions;
- direct exposure to vents, heaters, or fireplaces;
- contact with damp walls and floors;
- long storage in uncontrolled basements, attics, or garages;
- excessive humidification that produces condensation or encourages mold.
If you use a humidifier or dehumidifier, keep it clean, size it for the room, and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Poorly controlled equipment can create a different problem.
How to monitor the room effectively
A household hygrometer can reveal trends. To make the readings useful:
- place it near the furniture without setting it on a vulnerable surface;
- keep it away from direct sun, open windows, vents, and point heat sources;
- let it stabilize before interpreting the number;
- record highs and lows over several weeks;
- compare seasons and HVAC operating periods;
- check accuracy according to the manufacturer or against a reference instrument.
One reading does not tell the full story. Sustained conditions and the speed of change are often more informative.

- Move furniture away from heaters, fireplaces, and direct supply air.

Moves, deliveries, and acclimation
Moving between regions or buildings may expose furniture to very different conditions. A piece arriving from a humid warehouse into strong air conditioning—or from a mild climate into intense winter heating—does not reach equilibrium immediately.
Avoid unpacking and placing it beside an extreme source at once. Inspect upon delivery, record shipping damage, and allow a reasonable transition in the service environment. On construction projects, coordinate delivery with building enclosure, HVAC operation, and wet trades; installing millwork while the site is releasing substantial moisture can affect materials and finishes.
